When we returned to the house after the ceremony, we were all silent as Talia cooked us dinner. The five of us all allowing the silence to help calm our sorrow. Talia’s humming filled the room, the familiar tune calming me more.

When had I become so close to these people? Over the weeks, I had friended them. Allowed them to break down my walls of hurt. Let them in on my thoughts and feelings. Trained with them and found myself reliant on their presence.

Talia placed a plate of steaming rice and chicken in front of each of us. This was the way Talia showed her love, she would cook and shop. It calmed her soul and in turn helped calm whoever she was with as well.

We all ate in silence; it wasn’t uncomfortable silence just the silence of friends who need to heal. It was nice to not worry for a few moments of the future. Their mere presence relaxed me and allowed me the space to mourn for my lost friends.

After dinner we all went to our rooms. I found myself lying in the middle of my bed, staring again at the ceiling. Wondering what came over me at the funeral. It was like an out of body experience. Kicking out the mage, feeling the God’s magic and even the ability to control my flames enough to lite the boats on fire. It was as if I wasn’t in full control of myself, the whole experience made my head hurt just thinking about it.

“Ember, may I come in?” Talia’s soft voice sounded at the door.

“Yes.” I answered, hoping her visit would be quick.

She opened the door, walked to my bed, and climbed under the covers with me. Her wings lay behind her, their soft iridescence looking redder than blue in the soft lighting of the room.

“I couldn’t sleep.” She whispered, laying on her side facing me.

“Neither could I.” I heaved a heavy sigh and shifted to lay facing her as well.

“Can I lay in here with you?” Her silver eyes were foggy as if the tragedy of the day was weighing on her.

I nodded, knowing I had to comfort her. My sweet, beautiful friend was saddened by all of this. The thought hurt my heart as she closed her eyes.

“How did you know about that mage?” She whispered; her eyes still closed.

“I don’t know. I just felt it on him. His negativity was so heavy and awful. It was like something in me took over and hated him being there.” I admitted.

“Well, I am grateful for it. As far as I know those fae deserved a true funeral. They were the ones who helped you escape right?” Her face was soft as she spoke.

“They did much more than that. They helped me with Julian, healed me from his beatings. Then when times had gotten worse, they did help me escape. They were the first friends I had ever had.” I could feel the sting of tears behind my eyes.

“I'm sorry, they sound like wonderful people Ember.
